When does the time change? When do we spring forward? - AL.com

Hang on folks…we’re almost there.

Daylight saving time begins Sunday, March 13, 2022, marking the time when we will “spring forward” one hour to mark the end of standard time.

Though we’ve had a little more light each day since the winter solstice on Dec. 21, we will see the big shift towards more daylight in the afternoon starting at 2 a.m. on March 13th when clocks officially jump an hour ahead (typically with your help before you go to bed, of course).

Daylight saving time always begins the second Sunday in March and ends the first Sunday in November (Nov. 6 in 2022).

What states in the U.S. don’t observe daylight saving time?

While Alabama makes the time shift, not every state does.

Most of Arizona and all of Hawaii don’t observe daylight saving time. Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands don’t participate in daylight saving time.

There is a bill before Congress – the Sunshine Protection Act- that would make daylight saving time year-round. It has languished in Congress for years, however, with little momentum.

History of daylight saving time in the U.S.

The U.S. enacted the first daylight saving time in 1918 as a way to conserve fuel in the waning days of World War I. It was enacted again during World War II.

In 1973, President Nixon signed the Emergency Daylight Saving Time Energy Conservation Act that made DST permanent in the U.S.

In 2005, the Uniform Time Act tweaked that schedule by setting the start of daylight saving time to the second Sunday of March and the end on the first Sunday of November, lengthening the duration of DST.
