GOLDEN, Colo. – The Augustana track & field teams had record-setting times and NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks as the squads competed at the Mines Winter Classic in Golden, Colorado, and the Bison Open in Fargo, North Dakota, on Friday night.
The women's distance medley relay of Patty Jo English, Ella Heinitz, Cami Streff and Nicolette Schmidt ran a blistering 11:55.96 to break the fieldhouse record at Colorado Mines. With the altitude and track conversions, the time puts the Vikings first in the nation converting to 11:31.17.
Alec Kray and Henry Klitzke also competed at the Mines Winter Classic, competing in the 3,000m.
The duo faced some of the nations-best with Klitzke running 8:33.70 and Kray following closely in 8:37.77. When converted, the times are well under the NCAA Provisional Qualifying standards and ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the NSIC.
The converted times of 8:10.59 and 8:14.66 are well under the NCAA Provisional Qualifying time and rank them first and second in the NSIC.
"We had a goal of coming out here and putting some big marks on the board and we certainly accomplished that," director of track & field/cross country Tracy Hellman said. "The women's distance medley relay really had a tremendous effort, and breaking the fieldhouse record is pretty impressive.
"Kray and Klitzke battled with top runners from the country and held their own. It was a big effort and we are excited for the next opportunity."
Meanwhile, at the Bison Open, the Vikings turned out stellar performances in the multi-events.
The pentathlon was highlighted by freshman Kylee Sallee, who placed second overall, scoring 3,266 points which hit the NCAA Provisional Qualifying standard.
In total, Sallee had personal bests in four of the five events. She started the pentathlon finishing sixth in the 60m hurdles, scoring 783 points with her time of 9.63. She placed second in the high jump, earning 724 points with her jump of 5-2.5. Sallee earned 532 points in the shotput where she threw 32-01.00. She won the long jump with a leap of 18-02.25, granting 712 points. She then rounded out the multis running a new personal-best 2:43.59 in the 800m to get her to 3,266 points.
Kaye Paschka placed third overall with 3,189 points placing second in the 60m hurdles (9.18) and third in the long jump (5.23m)
Maria Pedroso also made her pentathlon debut, earning 3,120 points to place fifth overall.
"I am very pleased with the pentathlon results," associate head coach Greg Binstock said. "This competition sets these athletes up for the conference multis with room, and time, to make improvements."
On the men's side, Tyl Woelber and Jonathan Sikel completed day one of the heptathlon. Woelber enters day two in first place with a point total of 3,204 points. He won three of four events, coming in the 60m, long jump, and shot put.
Woelber ran 7.14 for 833 points, 23-11.00 for 883 points and 45-00.50 for 712 points. He finished third in the high jump with a leap of 6-05.50 good for 776 points.
In total, Woelber set personal bests in the 60m, long jump and shot put.
Sikel enters day two of the heptathlon in seventh place with 2,623 points, with a third-place finish in the long jump (22-03.75).

The Vikings continue a busy weekend Saturday with the completion of the heptathlon at the Bison Open, while a contingency of Vikings compete at the Ted Nelson Classic hosted by Minnesota State in Mankato, Minnesota. Field events are slated to start at 11 a.m. with running events starting at 11:30 a.m.
