• These are a sample of the story collections for adults. “Not Dead Yet and Other Stories” by Hadley Moore, a former Manistee resident who spoke at our fall Michigan Authors program, considers other viewpoints as the characters move through the darker parts of their lives.

•  “Joy: and 52 Other Very Short Stories” by Erin McGraw provides explanations by the characters as they defend their choices. Sometimes funny and other times distressing, this anthology highlights human nature at its best and worst.

• Laura Lippman’s newest book, “Seasonal Work: Stories” examines the unintentional consequences of deception when it is discovered things aren’t as they seem. Insecurity forces people to react, and uncertainty reigns in this compendium from one of today’s top crime writers.

• “Wild West: Short Stories” by Elmer Kelton is a selection of stories set in Texas ranch country. From the American frontier to the 20th century, these stories encompass the spirit and courage necessary to survive the hand one is dealt.

• “Tiny Tales: Stories of Romance, Ambition, Kindness, and Happiness” by Alexander McCall Smith is a wonderful collection of extremely short stories, some of them only two pages. Enjoy the comics that accompany these adventures.
