SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- For the third time this season, Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball sophomore guard Malachi Smith has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week presented by GEICO following his efforts in wins over Wofford and The Citadel last week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Smith becomes just the second Moc in program history to win the award three or more times in a season (Casey Jones, 3x, 2014-15). Marking the fourth POTW selection of his career, the point guard is one of only two Mocs to ever win the award four or more times (Willie White, 5x, 1981-84) since the program moved to NCAA Division I in 1977-78.

The Belleville, Ill., native averaged 25.5 points on 53.1% (17-of-32) shooting, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals in a pair of league wins to help the Mocs improve to 13-3 overall and 3-0 in SoCon play last week. He shot 56.3% (9-of-16) from three and claimed a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio in 35.7 minutes per contest.

In Wednesday's road win at Wofford, Smith scored 24 points on 7-of-12 shooting which included a 5-of-8 mark from behind the arc and pulled in five rebounds to help UTC claim a hard-fought 75-67 victory over the Terriers. It marked the ninth-straight road game in which Smith scored 20 or more points.

In an 85-67 home victory over The Citadel on Saturday, Smith dropped a game-high 27 points on 50.0% (10-of-20 FG, 4-of-8 3PT) shooting from the floor while adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals. It notched his sixth time this season scoring 27 or more points and the first time doing it on his home floor.

Smith has scored in double digits in the last 10 games, averaging 25.0 points per game over that span while shooting at a 61.1% (91-of-149) clip from the floor, 45.3% (24-of-53) from three and 83.0% (44-of-53) from the charity stripe. For the season, he ranks 14th in NCAA DI with a 20.8 points per game average and fourth in total points with 333.

Chattanooga (13-3, 3-0) heads to Western Carolina on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. matchup against the Catamounts before returning to the Roundhouse on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET to face SoCon foe Furman in a nationally televised contest on CBS Sports Network.
