This holiday weekend, catch the series finale of “Insecure” or a supremely chill show about restoring family heirlooms.
This weekend I have … 40 minutes, and I need closure.
‘Insecure’
When to watch: Sunday at 10 p.m., on HBO.
“I just want to fast-forward to the part of my life when everything’s OK,” Issa (Issa Rae) mutters to her reflection in the mirror after a particularly rough night, and that’s the guiding vibe of this lovely, bittersweet finale. As in life, the characters here might not make the decisions you hoped they would, especially when it comes to love and romance, but that’s what friends are for. “Insecure” is about the in-between time of early adulthood — a time that doesn’t last forever. And so while saying goodbye to excellent shows is always a bummer, five seasons feels about right.
… a few hours, and I like thrilled British people.
‘The Repair Shop’
When to watch: Now, on Discovery+.
This supremely gentle show is about the repair and restoration of family heirlooms, and happy tears abound, along with all sorts of glorious tools and solvents. If you are prone to “What if I had … a workshop???” fantasies, or if you struggle to part with broken objects, proceed with caution. Otherwise, this is the perfect show for family viewing or general de-stressing. Three seasons are available to stream now on Discovery+, and a fourth season will air in a marathon on Friday, Saturday and Jan. 1, starting each day at 9 a.m. on Discovery. A fifth season arrives in 2022.
… several hours, and what was that thing I was saving to watch with my parents?
‘The Beatles: Get Back’
When to watch: Now, on Disney+.
This three-part, nearly eight-hour mini-series follows the Beatles as they put together “Let It Be.” In addition to being a fascinating music documentary, “Get Back” is a prime opportunity to contemplate conflict resolution, creative atmospheres and how sometimes love inhibits change. There’s also an invigorating tension between feeling like the feeble mortal watching footage captured from Mt. Olympus and feeling like the hands-off god who already knows what the future holds, the glories and tragedies ahead. If anyone in your family received a musical instrument for Christmas, watch this.
