Third-Set Rally Comes Up Short As Volleyball Finishes Road Trip With Loss At Falcons - WOU Athletics

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Western Oregon University volleyball team made a strong push in the third set, but weren't able to come all the way back to force a fourth set as Seattle Pacific claimed the 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 26-24) Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory on Saturday afternoon at Royal Brougham Pavilion.

In the opening set, WOU (2-10, 0-5 GNAC) held an early 4-3 lead off points from Lauren Smith and Bailee Hartsook. After Emily Olson and Hartsook recorded kills to even the set at six, Seattle Pacific (8-5, 4-2 GNAC) reeled off the next four points for a 10-6 lead. Lauren Smith added another kill and an error by the Falcons kept things close at 13-10. Trailing by six, the Wolves made one last push getting a kill from Olson and an error by SPU trimmed the deficit to four before the Falcons closed the set on a 5-1 run to take the first set at 25-17.

SPU took the momentum into the second set moving ahead 6-3. A double-block by Makenzie York and Hartsook had the Wolves back to within one at 9-8. With SPU still ahead at 10-9, the Falcons went on a 6-0 run to move out to a 16-9 lead. Points from Isabel Hurliman, Bella MacLellan and Olson weren't enough down the stretch with SPU taking the second set at 25-15 to move out to a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Wolves came out strong in the third set pulling ahead at 7-5 off a service ace from Laney O'Neil and a kill by Olson. WOU continued to hold one-point lead through the set at 10-9 on a service ace by Sophie Matlock, at 11-10 on a kill by Olson and again at 12-11 on a kill by Lauren Smith. SPU responded going on a 6-0 run that was stopped by a kill from Delaney Smith at 17-13. The Wolves came right back getting a kill by Hartsook, service ace by O'Neil and a double-block by MacLellan and Hartsook had WOU to within one at 18-17. WOU fought back to even the set at 23 on a kill by Lauren Smith. After the teams traded kills, SPU tallied two straight kills to win the third set at 26-24 and take the match at 3-0.

Overall for the match, WOU recorded 31 kills to 19 errors in 99 chances to hit .121. SPU had 50 kills to 15 errors in 101 swings to hit .347. WOU held the advantage in service aces (5-4) and in blocks (10-7). SPU held the edge in assists (49-29) and blocks (42-33).

Hartsook led the offense with eight kills, while Olson added six. O'Neil had 14 assists, with Aubrey Stanton tallying 11. On defense, Hurliman led the back row with 10 digs and MacLellan sent back five blocks.

Maddie Pruden paced SPU with 12 kills, while Emily Tulino added 26 assists. On defense, Abigail Cunningham had 19 digs and Hannah Hair sent back five blocks.

WOU will return home this week to face Western Washington on Thursday night starting at 7 p.m. inside NPE Gym. They will close the week on Saturday night against Simon Fraser also starting at 7 p.m.
