It was a tough loss. Minnesota was up a man and only found the back of the net once as they lost 1-3 against the Colorado Rapids at home.
The match started off in the Loons’ favor as Emanuel Reynoso sent a through ball past the Rapids’ defenders to Franco Fragapane. Fragapane then slotted the ball back to Adrien Hunou who threaded the ball through two defenders’ legs and into the back of the net. Through the remainder of the first half, Minnesota and Colorado created some opportunities, but neither could put one on the board. A little over 10 minutes into the second half, Hunou had a break away that was obstructed by defender Danny Wilson. The referee gave Wilson a red card, giving Minnesota the man advantage. But in the 70th minute, Tyler Miller committed a foul inside the box that changed the momentum of the game. After video review, Colorado took the penalty and tied the game 1-1. Being a man down wasn’t going to stop them as they scored another goal in the 84th minute. In extra time, Lucas Esteves finished a third goal to give Colorado the 1-3 win over Minnesota.
“Extremely disappointing, to be up a man for as long as we were, to only come up with one goal tonight, to give up the goals that we did,” said midfielder Ethan Finlay. “I mean there's not much good to take away from this game. It's extremely disappointing.”
Although the loss was a difficult one to take in the moment, there were some good things that came out of the match. For example, Fragapane’s assist gave him his eighth of the season, tying him with Reynoso for the lead on the team. Furthermore, Juan Agudelo and Ethan Finlay both made their 250th MLS appearances. On a more personal note, Wil Trapp became a father for the second time over the weekend.
“It’s hard to kind of put into words at the moment,” said midfielder Wil Trapp. “He’s still so fresh and so new. It’s funny because being a dad of two … being a dad is one thing but having two boys, it’s like, ‘Whoa, that’s me.’ That’s a big step. Family of four. But it’s amazing, we’re very blessed.”
With good things happening, the Loons are looking to learn from their mistakes and move onto the next match in Texas against Austin FC.
“They have a good understanding … they play a good style where they want to play in between lines and break you down in a very systematic way,” said defender Brent Kallman. “I think the shape of the group, being compact and disciplined, not letting them play through us, making them go around us or try to the top is going to be really important.”
With Austin being a dangerous team at home, Minnesota knows this game has to be treated as if it is their last. Fortunately, players who were on international duty are slowly making their way back and could possibly be seeing some playing time this Saturday.
“We need everybody available,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath. “Obviously at the weekend, we were without four starters or people who’ve played most of the games this season and that’s never ideal. But as long as you keep putting fixtures on international weekends, that’s going to happen more and more as the league gets better and better, and as we try to bring more and more quality into the league. It’s something that we’ve got to get on with. Certainly, it’ll be nice to have all the internationals back. Hopefully they all come back fit and healthy.”
