BETHLEHEM, Pa. –

The UMass Lowell cross country team competed extremely well against national competition in the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh. The men's team finished as the sixth-place squad out of 40 teams in the Men's College Gold 8k, while the four individual River Hawk women finished in the top 50 out of 291 runners.

"It was the first race of the season for many of them so that happens," said Head Coach Gary Gardner. "Still finishing sixth out of 128 total teams in three meets on a below average day shows how far the program has come."

Graduate student Christopher Alfond (Ashby, Mass.) led the squad today, finishing 24th with a time of 23:54.4. Only seconds behind him, graduate student Kyle Cloutier (Lancaster, Mass.) finished strong to come in 30th with a time of 23:57.7, beating his previous career-high of 24:21.3.

Rounding out the scoring for the men's team were senior Drew Everett (Amesbury, Mass.), graduate student Derek Holmes (Marshfield, Mass.) and graduate student Daniel Cosgrove (Boxford, Mass.), who finished with top-100 times in the field of 357 competitors. Everett and Cosgrove both ended the day with career-best times of 24:08.0 and 24:36.3, respectively.

In the Open Men's 8k, the River Hawks top-5 finishers all set career-best times for an 8k race, led by freshman Jan Wouter van den Akker (Groningen, Netherlands) who finished 15th with a time of 25:08.1. Just behind him, senior Joseph Walsh (Auburn, Mass.) crushed his former career best by over a minute with a time of 25:38.9, leading to a 42nd place finish.

Senior Joseph Young Jr. (Shrewsbury, Mass.) clocked in next for the UMass Lowell squad, barely missing the top-50 mark with a 25:46.0 finish. Rounding out the top-five River Hawk performers were freshmen Landen Vaillancourt (New Ipswich, N.H.) and Will Benoit (Fairhaven, Mass.), who both snuck in just under the 26-minute mark.

On the women's side, four River Hawks competed as individuals in the Open Women's 6K. Senior Sarah Burns (Billerica, Mass.) led the UMass Lowell pack with a personal-best 22:28.8 finish. Junior Allison Anusauskas (Auburn, Mass.), freshman Delaney Swanson (Swanzey, N.H.) and sophomore Mary Yount (Northampton, Mass.) all made their first appearances in the 6K for the River Hawks, crossing in quick succession at 23:01.4, 23:07.3 and 23:15.0.

"The four women that ran in the open race did a nice job, and they're all helping us to build depth for the conference meet," commented Gardner after the meet.

The River Hawks take on the New England Championships next Saturday, October 9, at Franklin Park in Boston.
