Despite Season-High Hitting Percentage, Volleyball Falls Short At Nighthawks - WOU Athletics

NAMPA, Idaho. – The Western Oregon University volleyball team posted a solid .226 hitting percentage for a season-best on Saturday at Northwest Nazarene. Despite the solid hitting day, the Nighthawks were able to hold off the Wolves to take the 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-20, 25-23) in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

WOU tallied 37 kills to 11 errors in 115 chances to hit .226. It was the fourth time this season the Wolves have hit over .200, as the previous season-best was .224 against Western New Mexico.

Isabel Hurliman paced the offense tying a season-high in kills with 17 as she hit .294 on the afternoon. Bailee Hartsook was second with seven kills and Lauren Smith added five. Aubrey Stanton setup the offense with 26 assists and added two service aces. On defense, Sophie Matlock added 12 digs and Stanton made it a double-double with 10 digs. Delaney Smith led the way in blocks with four, including one solo.

Northwest Nazarene (4-12, 2-7 GNAC) posted the first three points of the opening set. The Wolves (2-14, 0-9 GNAC) came right back with the next three points with a kill by Lauren Smith and then after a double-block by Bella MacLellan and Hurliman, an attack error tied the set at three. NNU came back with a 5-0 run to move out to an 8-3 lead. WOU got back to within two at 10-8 on a kill by Hartsook. The Nighthawks then went on another run, this time a 10-4 spurt to move in front 20-12. The Wolves got points down the stretch from Delaney Smith, Stanton and Hurliman, but Northwest Nazarene went on to take the first set, 25-18.

In the second set, MacLellan tallied a kill early on to move WOU to a 5-4 lead. After NNU went in front by three, the Wolves kept coming with Hurliman and Hartsook recording kills to pull WOU back to within one at 11-10. Trailing 15-12, WOU came back with a 4-0 run to move back in front. Hartsook and Hurliman recorded kills to leave WOU with a 16-15 lead. WOU made one last push to even the set at 20 off a kill and service ace by Hurliman, before NNU went on a 5-0 run to take the second set at 25-20.

The third set was tight throughout, with NNU moving ahead 13-11, just to watch the Wolves come back with a 5-0 run. MacLellan tallied a kill around five errors by the Nighthawks that left WOU with a 16-13 lead. Northwest Nazarene answered that run with a 6-0 run of their own to go in front 19-16. WOU kept fighting back, eventually regaining the lead at 23-22. Hurliman tallied two kills and then combined with Delaney Smith for a block, before Stanton closed a 4-0 run with a service ace at 23-22. The Nighthawks, backed by three straight kills from Natalie Sullivan, finished the set on a 3-0 run to take the third at 25-23 and the match at 3-0.

NNU tallied 53 kills to 17 errors in 128 chances to hit .281. WOU held the advantage in blocks (6-2), while NNU held the edge in service aces (4-3), assists (49-34) and digs (62-45).

Sullivan led the Nighthawks with 20 kills, while Mattisyn Cope added 10. Mckenzie Lee dished out 43 assists, while on defense, Caroline McMahon had 16 digs and both Anna Gable and Molly Anderson sent back two blocks.

WOU continues the road swing next Saturday, Oct. 23 when they will travel to Lacey, Wash., to face Saint Martin's starting at 5:15 p.m.
