The Youngstown State women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the final 23 minutes, but its comeback fell short and suffered a 3-2 loss to Akron on Sunday afternoon at Farmers National Bank Field.

The Penguins fall to 0-6-1 overall while the Zips improve to 2-5-0 on the season.

The Zips struck first converting a penalty kick by Katie Stafford with just 2:16 left before halftime.

The Zips extended their lead to 3-0 after after another goal by Stafford at the 50:02 mark and a score by Calli Fisher at the 66:20 mark.

Just seven seconds later, junior Regan LaVigna scored her first goal of the season from an assist from Abriana Rondin to get the Penguins on the board.

Youngstown State peppered Akron goalkeeper Penelope Cuirinier with three shots on goal in a span of one-minute and 37 seconds but Cuirinier recorded game-changing saves.

YSU junior Marcella Sizer's header to the top right corner off a cornerkick was denied by a diving Cuirinier, and Angelina Schilling's shot to the lower right 13 seconds later was also denied by Cuirinier.

Junior Mikayla Mustard's header off a cornerkicker was also stopped by the Zips' goalkeeper.

In the final minute of the game, Sizer scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Lianna Van Sice to cut the lead to 3-2.
