When does the time change? When does daylight saving time end? - AL.com

Temperatures outside are still pretty warm but we’re not too far away from the annual time-changing ritual that signals cooler weather is ahead.

There’s a twice-a-year ritual of “spring forward, fall back”– up an hour in the spring, back an hour in the fall – to signal the start and end of daylight saving time.

This year, daylight saving time ends on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 2 a.m. That means most people will reset their clocks back one hour before going to bed on Saturday night, Nov. 6.

The change shifts more light into the evening hours. The practice traces its roots back to 1784 when Benjamin Franklin wrote a letter to a Paris newspaper proposing a tax on those whose windows were closed after sunrise. The letter was meant to be satirical but the idea of moving the clock to lessen the dependence on energy sources – in Franklin’s case candles and oil lamps– began. The practice was fairly irregular until World War I and World War II when the time change was instituted to help conserve energy needed for military production efforts.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005, which was implemented in 2007, added four weeks to daylight saving time by changing it to start on the second Sunday in March and end on the first Sunday in November so we will be dealing with dark afternoons until March 13, 2022 when we restart the entire time-change ritual.
