KINGSVILLE, Texas – It was a fight to the end, as the Western Oregon University football team tried to come back in the fourth quarter, but just fell short Saturday night with Texas A&M-Kingsville claiming the 24-10 win.

Entering the fourth quarter down 17-3, WOU (0-2) quickly answered a score by TAM-K (1-1) with a five play, 30-yard drive to once again make it a two-score contest.

Starting in Javelina territory following a couple of penalties and a 31-yard kickoff return by Curtis Anderson, the Wolves began the drive deep in TAM-K territory.

Faced with a fourth-and-four, Ryan Worthley completed a 17-yard pass to Damon Hickok down to the seven-yard line for a first-and-goal. On the next play, Omari Land broke free around the left side and avoided a couple of tacklers to find the end zone leaving WOU down 14 at 24-10.

With time ticking down, the Wolves had to go with an on-side kick and Hickok recovered at the Javelina 46. Worthley found Andrew Valladares for 17 yards. Then another 11-yard strike to Marquis Sampson had the ball in the red zone. Land then caught a six-yard pass setting up one last play from the Javelina 12. With one second left, Worthley found Jarren Ford for the score, but a penalty made the Wolves replay the down. With one untimed down left, the pass was incomplete and the Javelinas claimed the win.

Early on, WOU had a promising start on the opening drive of the game. A big third-and-nine was picked up on a Worthley pass to Thomas Wright that moved the ball to the Javelina 34. After reaching the 32 and on third down, Worthley's pass was intercepted stalling out the drive.

The defense made a big stand late in the quarter forcing the Javelinas to take a 24-yard field goal for the 3-0 lead.

On the ensuing drive, WOU answered to tie the game. After Worthley hit Ford for a 14-yard reception, on third-and-11, Worthley found an open Wright down the near sidelines for a 42-yard gain to the Javelina 26. After reaching the 17, WOU ended up getting a field goal from 34 yards out by Daniel Cossette for the 3-3 tie early in the second quarter.

TAM-K closed the scoring in the first half when a 50-yard TD run pushed the Javelinas in front 10-3. WOU nearly scored right before the half a couple of times. A lengthy 12 play, 47-yard drive had the Wolves inside the Javelinas' 30-yard line. On fourth-and-three, the pass was incomplete turning the ball over on downs. Then on the last drive before the break, short passes to Ford and Kade Hustler and multiple runs by Land had the Wolves at the Javelinas' 18. WOU went for a field goal, but the kick hit the upright leaving TAM-K with the 10-3 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Javelinas scored the only points on a strip-sack that was recovered in the end zone pushing the lead to 17-3.

WOU held a 308-270 total yards edge, passing for 241. The Javelinas used the rushing attack picking up 214 yards on the ground.

Worthley went 30-45 for 241 yards, with a long pass of 42 yards. Wright caught three passes for 61 yards. Valladares added four catches for 35 yards. Both Sampson and Land hauled in five catches for 33 yards. Land rushed 21 times for 73 yards and a touchdown, with a long carry of 18 yards.

Jaylin Parnell led the defense with nine tackles, six solo and 2.5 tackles for loss. Kenny Brown recorded seven tackles. Joey Sinclair had six tackles and a fumble recovery. L.J. Lovelace added three QB hurries.

Anderson returned three kickoffs for 90 yards.

The Javelinas only threw 15 passes for 56 yards. Christian Anderson rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown. QB Shane Johnson added 73 yards and a touchdown. Out of the backfield, Josh McGowen led the receivers with one catch for 39 yards and also rushed for 48 yards.

Kirkland Joseph led the defense with 12 tackles, two for loss. Cameron Cauthen had 11 tackles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

WOU will continue their road swing to start the season next Saturday when they travel just up the road to Portland State for a 2:05 p.m. kickoff in Hillsboro. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
