The Hudson Valley has been dubbed one of the world’s greatest places by TIME magazine.
The picturesque Upstate New York region made the list alongside spots like the Gold Coast of Australia, a surfer’s paradise; the otherworldly salt flats of Bolivia; and Orlando, Florida, home to the forever-magical Disney World.
Varied as they are, the Hudson Valley and the 99 other locales on the wanderlust compendium share an admirable trait, TIME said: As the coronavirus pandemic paralyzed the world last year, each locale on the list found a way to adapt and grow.
In its roundup last week of places readers should strive to explore in 2021, TIME tapped the Hudson Valley as a noteworthy destination due — in part — to its plethora of charming places to stay and dine. That included Hutton Brickyards, a sprawling retreat in Kingston that features luxury cabins by the Hudson River, and Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a farm-to-table restaurant near Tarrytown that made The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.
“The Hudson Valley, known for its country charm and succulent agriculture, is fast becoming one of the most popular locales in New York,” TIME wrote.
The popularity of the region grew during the pandemic when New York City residents fled north, the magazine said, and when the LEGOLAND New York Resort fully opened in Goshen.
For Upstate enthusiasts, the allure of the region is no surprise: From exploring the abandoned, island-bound Bannerman’s Castle to snacking at a celebrity-owned candy shop, there are plenty of adventures to chase in the Hudson Valley.
