RUSTON, La. – The Middle Tennessee baseball team dropped their second game of the 2021 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Baseball Championship to Old Dominion 10-6. The Blue Raiders (24-28-1, C-USA 12-19-1) hit three doubles and scored five runs in the final two frames, but fell four runs short of the comeback.

Despite dealing with some dehydration issues early in the game, Blue Raider starting pitcher Peyton Wigginton held the Monarchs to one run through the first four innings.
Wigginton was helped by his defense who turned three 6-4-3 double plays in the first three innings.

However, the Raiders couldn't hold off the ODU offense, which exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Monarchs collected five hits including a grand slam off the bat of shortstop Tommy Bell to fall behind 8-1.

ODU stretched their lead to 10-1 in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run off of Blue Raider freshman pitcher Jaden Hamm.

The Blue Raiders started to claw their way back into the ballgame by raking in two runs on four hits in the top of the eighth. RBI doubles off the bats of freshmen Bryce Symlar and Luke Vinson cut the Monarch lead down to 10-3.

In the top of the ninth, ODU relievers were having issues finding the strike-zone. Gabe Jennings drew a walk to start the inning and Nathan Sanders and Mason Speirs were both hit by pitches in the inning.

Justin Medlin came in as a pinch-hitter and plated two runs with an RBI double down the right field line cutting the deficit to 10-5.

Medlin's two-bagger was the junior's second extra-base pinch-hit of the season, his last was a solo home run at Southern Miss on May 9.

Later in the inning, Symlar would score Medlin from third on a sacrifice fly to right field and pickup his second RBI of the game and bring the score to 10-6.

However, the Blue Raiders ran out of innings and that's where the comeback and the game would end.

The Blue Raiders move on to play FAU in a win-or-go-home matchup tomorrow (5/28). First pitch for the game between MT and the Owls is scheduled for 3 p.m. at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston, La.

You can watch tomorrow's game on ESPN+ and fans can also listen locally on WGNS at 1450 AM, 100.5 FM or 101.9 FM or on TuneIn.
