OXFORD, Ohio. (EMUEagles.com) —

The Eastern Michigan University track & field program fought until the end, but ultimately fell short of bringing home a title at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, May 8, at Miami University's George L. Rider Track. Both the men's and women's teams briefly took the lead during the competition, however, the women finished second overall (90) while the men were third (136).

"The team battled hard the entire weekend," Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "While the team results were not what we were hoping for, I'm proud of the effort. We had some setbacks over the last month that hurt us but that's all part of the game. Our athletes stayed positive and fought hard until the end and that's all that you can ask for."

The men's throwers got the day rolling for the Eagles with a 2-4-6 finish in the hammer throw. Graduate student Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron) produced a school-record toss of 66.51m to earn eight big points for his team. Meanwhile, classmate Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) (4th - 61.22m) and senior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) (6th - 60.54m) chipped in five more points in the event.

Meanwhile in the javelin throw, senior Joe Duff (Crosswell, Mich.-Crosswell-Lexington (Concordia)) (3rd - 60.40m) and graduate student Garrett Wade (Rio Rancho, N.M.-V. Sue Cleveland) (59.95m) gained solid points for EMU. Also in the field, redshirt senior Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Windhoek, Namibia-Fishburne Military (Bethany College)) achieved a second-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 15.33m.

On the track, junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) paced all competitors in the 5000m race (14:09.5) and took fourth in the 1500m run (3:44.95). Junior hurdler Payne Wylie (Elstow, Saskatchewan-Colonsay School) notched a victory in the 110m hurdles with a PR of 13.96.

The women's team grabbed a pair of event victories and one runner-up finish on the track. Leading the way in the 100m hurdles was junior Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peter's) as she crossed the finish line in a career-high 13.87. Additionally, the quartet of sophomore Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts), redshirt senior Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian), and graduate students Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) and Kolby Ganther (Park city, Kan.-Northeast Magnet (Garden City C.C.)) dominated the 4x100m relay race. The crew clocked in at 45.64 for the event title, over .5 seconds faster than the runner-up team. Earlier in the day, Davis picked up a silver medal after getting second in the 100m dash in 11.77 seconds.

In the field, senior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's (Texas Southern)) handled business in the high jump as she took home the crown with a height of 1.78m. For Johnson, she has now won an outdoor high jump title to go along with her back-to-back indoor victories. Furthermore, her outdoor mark is good for third all-time in program history. Graduate student Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill.-Montini Catholic) wrapped up her career with a personal-best score of 4400 in the heptathlon. The Illinois native rounded out the top-five in the long jump (5.20m) and earned bronze in the javelin throw (34.43m).

Up next, the Eagles will have one more tune-up before the regional meet. On Saturday, May 15, Eastern will head down to Toledo, Ohio for the Toledo Rocket Invitational where action is set to begin at 9 a.m. From there, EMU will wait to see who will qualify for the NCAA East Regionals. The meet will take place on the campus of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. between Wednesday, May 25 through Sunday, May 29.
