4 Yankees takeaways: Miguel Andujar taking Clint Frazier’s playing time; Gleyber Torres on fire, more - NJ.com

NEW YORK — Miguel Andujar came up just short. Nick Madigral’s long liner landed just at the start of the left-center warning track for a triple with one out in the eighth inning.

It didn’t hurt as the Yankees went on to beat the White Sox, 7-0, at Yankee Stadium. On the next play, Tim Anderson rocketed a grounder at third baseman Gio Urshela, who threw Madigral out at home. But it was a moment for Andujar to showcase any improvements he might have made as he adapts to left field.

It didn’t happen. Manager Aaron Boone didn’t mind, though.

“Miggy’s moving well out there,” Boone said.

It’s clear that even with Clint Frazier (neck stiffness) back and available, the Yankees are going to continue to give Andujar chances in left field as long has his bat continues to produce.

On Saturday, Andujar contributed by clubbing an RBI double, his first extra-base hit of the season. He’s hit .300 (9-for-30) with four runs in his last eight games after going hitless in his first four games.

Brett Gardner, who has shifted to center field in Aaron Hicks’ absence, has been impressed with Andujar.

“He’s a guy that works really hard and you tell him to go out there and play a position he’s never played before, he’s not going to complain,” Gardner said. “He’s going to do his best. So, I just try to continue to help him along and build him up out there in the outfield and continue to get his reps in. Every game he plays out there, he’ll continue to get better.”

Here are three more Yankees observations:

Gleyber Torres on fire: Torres had four RBI in Saturday’s win and accounted for both of the runs in Friday’s victory, in which he registered the walk-off. Torres was hitting .571/.600/.857 (8-for-14) with a home run and a walk since coming of the COVID-19 injury list Wednesday. “When he’s getting a pitch, he’s putting it in play now with authority,” Boone said. “I felt like there were times throughout that first month or so when he was in some good counts or even when he got off a good swing, it was foul ball. I feel like throughout most of the year he’s done a good job of controlling the zone and made some pretty good swing decisions. Now we’re starting to see the extra-base hit come along and I think that’s a product of getting into some counts and when you do get a pitch and make sure ou stick it. Obviously, this series it’s come in some big spots with runners out there.”

Aaron Judge is back: He’s extended his on-base streak to a season-high 14 straight games. Over that stretch, he’s hit .447 (21-for-47) with 11 runs, a double, five homers and seven RBI. He’s also reached base multiple times in 10 of those 14 games.

Yankees pitchers … have allowed just one run over their last four games, marking the third time in franchise history the Yankees have allowed one run or fewer over a four-game span. They have tossed eight shutouts this season, the most in the majors (the Giants and Dodgers entered Saturday with seven). And Saturday marks just the fourth time in franchise history the Yankees have recorded at least eight shutouts through their first 46 games of the season (nine in 1910 and 1958; eight in 1955).
