INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI softball had its comeback attempt come up short in the first game of the day against Youngstown State before the offense went quiet in game two against the Penguins.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE 7 – IUPUI 6
Down 7-3 going in to the final inning, IUPUI put a scare in Youngstown State but finished 60 feet away from tying the game. The inning began with a walk by Rachael Gregory. After a strikeout, singles by Tori Sivert and Jaida Speth loaded the bases. Morgan Gilbert grounded out but the first run of the inning came in.
With two outs, Amber Pagan drew a walk to load the bases again. Jennah Speth walked in the next at-bat to make the score 7-5. On the next pitch, Jordan Barnes was hit by the pitch and IUPUI pulled within one. With Maicey Bedrick up and the tying run at third, Bedrick was called out on strikes to end the IUPUI comeback chance.
IUPUI's offense got off to a slow start in the game with the first 11 batters set down before Jennah Speth homered to center field on the first pitch of her at bat. Speth's fifth home run of the season tied the game at 1-1 after Youngstown State had a solo home run in the second inning.
YSU took the lead right back in the top of the fifth using a triple and double to score the first run of the inning and with two outs, got a single to push the lead to two.
In the bottom of the fifth, Bedrick led off with a double and moved to third on an infield hit by Gregory. A sacrifice bunt by Hailey Pop put runners on second and third. Sivert hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Bedrick and the throw from center went out of play allowing Gregory to score and tie the game.
The game broke open in the top of the sixth as Youngstown State hit back-to-back doubles to start the inning and a two-run home run with two outs.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE 5 – IUPUI 0
IUPUI only managed one hit in the final game of the series against the Penguins, a single by Abbey Haas in the bottom of the third. In that inning, the Jags got a runner to second but could not get any closer.
The Jaguars got one other runner to second in the game as Gregory reached on an error in the fifth and moved to second on a groundout but two strikeouts ended any chance for the Jags.
A two-run double for Youngstown State opened the scoring in the top of the first. The Penguins scored a run in the third on a double and another run in the fifth on a wild pitch. The last run of the game came in the seventh on a single as the first three batters of the inning reached base.
UP NEXT
IUPUI will head to Chicago for a two-game set against UIC on Tuesday (April 6). The doubleheader against the Flames will begin at 3 p.m. ET.
