WICHITA—The Wichita State track and field teams opened up their outdoor seasons with the Shocker Spring Invitational on Friday night inside of Cessna Stadium.
Distance races, javelin and hammer throw competitions made up the first day of competition and kicked off a return to the outdoor track.
Distance coach Kirk Hunter said it was a good opener and it felt exciting to be back with outdoor track.
"It was exciting for athletes like Zack Penrod, Rebekah Topham, Nicole McMillen, Taran Taylor and all of the throwers that haven't competed in two years," Hunter said. "It was awesome to see them in uniform again. Having people on an outdoor track under the lights, what more could you ask for? It's amazing."
His distance crew saw impressive performances across the board.
Rebekah Topham led the way in the women's 3,000 meters, winning the event with a time of 9:40.74. Hunter said he liked the way she finished the race.
Winny Koskei finished as the runner-up in that race with a time of 9:53.08 and Nicole McMillen made her Shocker debut, finishing the 3,000 meters in 10:01.68.
Hunter said he liked Yazmine Wright's 1,500-meter race the most on Friday night. She finished fourth with a time of 4:31.98.
Shocker men took the top three spots in the men's 1,500 meters. Zack Penrod won the race with a time of 3:50.75. Adam Moore took second in 3:51.36 and Jed Helker finished third with a time of 3:51.39.
"Overall, (the distance runners) are tired," Hunter said. "We should be because we're not trying to run our best times now, we're trying to run them at the end of the season. The hard work and getting back into the rhythm really effected them. No big deal. We want to run fast later not now.
In the field, Michael Bryan picked up right where he left off after the indoor season. Bryan set the school record in the men's hammer throw. He threw a personal-best mark of 66.72m/218-11 in the men's hammer throw to win the event.
Cory Martens finished sixth in the men's hammer throw. Martens returned this season to use his final season of eligibility.
Taran Taylor made his highly-anticipated return and finished fourth in an impressive men's javelin field. He threw the javelin 68.72m/225-5.
Jeff Ast also finished in the top five with a fifth-place finish and a mark of 60.41m/198-2. Davis Dubbert had a personal best with a throw of 60.03m/196-11 and Cauy Lindsay also put up a personal-best mark with a toss of 58.90m/193-3.
The Shockers return to action Saturday with the second and final day of competition at the Shocker Spring Invitational. Throws start the day at 10:30 a.m. and running events start at 12:30 p.m. inside of Cessna Stadium.
