LOS ANGELES — The Oregon women's lacrosse team scored four unanswered goals between the end of the first half and the start of the second to pull within three on Sunday, but the Ducks were unable to get any closer in a 16-9 loss to USC at Soni McAlister Field.
How it Happened: USC (6-3, 3-1 Pac-12) jumped out to a 5-0 lead to open the game before Lillian Stump and Nakeeya McCardell answered with back-to-back goals for the Ducks (1-7, 1-3 Pac-12). The Trojans extended their lead to 10-3 with five minutes to go before halftime, but Oregon again responded with three straight goals to make it a 10-6 game at the break.
Hanna Hilcoff started the run with an unassisted goal, and Stump found Morgan McCarthy for a score with 44 seconds remaining. That duo paired up again just before halftime, with McCarthy connecting with Stump for an acrobatic goal just seconds before the buzzer.
Stump opened the second half with her third goal of the game to cut the deficit to three, but USC went on a 6-1 run to pull away. Sophomore Katie Collins scored the final goal of the game with just under three minutes remaining.
Who Stood Out: Stump and McCarthy each recorded four total points to lead the Ducks, with Stump scoring three goals with an assist and McCarthy finishing with two goals and two dimes. McCardell also had two goals, and Hilcoff and Collins each scored once. Senior Alle Dunbar matched her career-high for the second straight game with 14 saves, while Sydnie Soto picked up a team-high five ground balls and Olivia Mannon led the way with three caused turnovers.
Notable: Stump recorded a hat trick or better for the third time this season and ninth time in her career … McCardell notched her third multi-goal game of the season, and McCarthy had her second … Hilcoff failed to score multiple goals for just the second time in 15 career games … Dating back to last season, Dunbar now has 101 total saves in her last nine games.
Up Next: Oregon will return home next weekend for rematches with Arizona State (Friday) and USC (Sunday) at Papé Field.
