Aggies struggle from the plate, come up short in Seattle opener - The Round Up

The New Mexico State baseball team looked to keep a five-game winning streak going in their series opener against Seattle, but came up short, losing 2-1 for just their second conference loss of the season to fall to 9-8 on the season.

Coming off a series sweep against Northern Colorado last time out, the Aggies continued an almost unblemished conference record and extended it to 7-1, looking only to grow the win column this time out.

This game has started out as unchartered territory for the Aggies potent offense, as it has been a back and forth game with no scoring early from either side. The Aggies started out with a hit in the top of the first from Kevin Jimenez who reached first but then was caught out trying to steal second and ended the top of the first.

After that, the next hit from NM State came in the third on a Jason Bush single to the right center, but again the Aggies could not capitalize and left hitters on base and ended the third without a score.

Both sides have had great pitching days so far as neither side has yet to score entering the fifth inning. Both sides have gotten hits but have not been able to get any runners home, as the game is coming into the final stretch.

Seattle finally got something going getting the first score of the game coming in the bottom of the sixth, as they got a homer from Mazzone as he sent it flying over the center field fence. This gave SU the lead at 1-0 entering the seventh.

Coming right back and answering was the Aggies getting an RBI from Ethan Mann who singled to left field sending Tristian Stacey home and tying up the game at 1-1 as things are heating up and closing in on the end.

In the bottom of the eighth, Seattle started to gain some momentum getting the bases loaded and getting in a runner to take the lead 2-1 on a wild pitch score by Gellos. Unable to get a score in the ninth Seattle U held on tight and come out with the win in game one of the four game series 2-1.

The Aggies could just not really find any rhythm today and when they got on base, they could just not send any runner home, but they will look to come out strong in the double header games tomorrow trying to first tie the series and then take the lead over the series.
