Avon Lake, Ohio
We finally have enough snow to build a snowman. Residents can now put their building skills to the test and enter the Avon Lake Parks and Recreation Department’s annual snowman contest.
Build a snowman in your yard (or in a city park) from now through Feb. 28, then take a picture of your masterpiece and submit it to the Avon Lake Parks and Recreation office.
Entrants are encouraged to add their own creativity when decorating your snowman. Create an animal, favorite movie or television character, show your Avon Lake spirit, or create a North Pole Village. A prize will be awarded to the winning individual/family. By submitting an entry, contestants grant the Avon Lake Parks and Recreation permission and authority to use the pictures in advertising or promotion.
Entry should include a photograph of the snowman with at least one of the builders in the photo for scale (families and groups in the pictures are welcomed), family name and address to verify residency. The contest is open to Avon Lake residents.
Submit entry online via email to the Avon Lake Parks and Recreation office at alrec@avonlake.org, or in person at the Recreation Department, 150 Avon Belden Road.
Another competition going on now is the annual holiday light display contest. Take a picture of your holiday lights and submit it to the Avon Lake Parks and Recreation office by Dec. 13. By submitting an entry, contestants grant the Avon Lake Parks and Recreation Department permission and authority to use the pictures in advertising or promotion.
Submissions should include a photograph of the decorated house or business, family/business name and address. Email submissions to alrec@avonlake.org, or mail/drop off submissions to the Recreation Department,150 Avon Belden Road.
AVON
Library computer time limited: All Lorain Public Library System branches (including Avon and North Ridgeville) will reduce the time limit permitted on public computers to one 30-minute session per patron, per day. The move comes after Lorain County reached the purple level on the Ohio Public Health Advisory System. All public computers have been spaced to allow for social distancing and each branch has sanitation sleeves available for the keyboard and mouse. Same-day computer reservations can be made in advance by calling ahead.
Recycling lights: Instead of placing broken holiday lights in your recycling bin, consider recycling them at Lowe’s (return desk area during normal business hours), 1445 Center Road; or the Lorain County Collection Center, 540 South Abbe Road, Elyria. Hours are Mondays noon to 4 p.m.; Wednesdays noon to 6 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Senior Center update: The Avon Senior Center remains closed, but there are still a number of services available. Transportation services and the loan out of medical equipment is still available for seniors. For transportation services, call 440-934-7433, or email ctovtin@cityofavon.com. For additional senior center information, call 440-934-2471.
Santa greetings: Visits with Santa Claus are a little different this year in many locations. Families are invited to the Miller Nature Preserve, 2739 Center Road for a free drive-thru event to meet with Santa curbside from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 11, 12, or 18. Guests must stay in their car. Children can also drop off letters in the North Pole mailbox. Children will receive a craft bag (while supplies last).
AVON LAKE
Basket donations: Avon-on-the Lake Garden Club President Elaine George, and Vice President Sue Newcomb recently organized a Basket Donation project for Avon/Avon Lake Community Resources Services (CRS) for the holiday season. Club members created gift baskets filled with non-perishable food, home essentials, games, toys, clothing, personal care products and more, as well as donating over 35 baskets, cash, checks and gift cards totaling over $3,500.
Shout-out: Passing along this shout-out from city officials from Facebook. An employee from Kimble Companies (trash collection) stopped to assist a resident who was stuck in her driveway during the recent snow storm.
City officials also noted that city plow crews started with five trucks on the road, salting ahead of the snow. As it started snowing, eight plows were on the road, with a second shift of six trucks through the night. Overall, plow crews were on the road for over 38 hours. Thank you!
NORTH RIDGEVILLE
Holiday food collection: North Ridgeville Community Care is currently collecting frozen hams and candy for Christmas. Bins and/or a shopping cart to collect donations are near the building’s garage door, 34015 Center Ridge Road.
Senior Center closes: Last month city officials made the decision to reopen the North Ridgeville Senior Center for planned activities only. As COVID-19 numbers continue to rise and after consulting with Lorain County Public Health, city officials have once again made the decision to cancel all activities and close the center until further notice.
The Meals on Wheels program will continue to operate with meals delivered to clients. Staff is also still available by phone and/or email, 440-353-082 (leave a message and someone will return your call).
Santa’s House: Lake Ridge Academy is sponsoring Santa’s House at Crocker Park in Westlake. Santa’s House is located inside Santa’s Village near Bath & Body Works, and will be open daily from noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday; and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Photos in the Lake Ridge Academy’s Santa’s House will be different this year to maintain safety guidelines from the health department. Santa will be located in a separate chair, six-feet apart from the child’s chair. Socially distanced photo opportunities are available. For more information, go to crockerpark.com/santashouse.
Coffee chat: Mayor Kevin Corcoran’s monthly Coffee & Conversation will take place from 8 to 9 p.m. Dec. 16 in council chambers at city hall, 7307 Avon Belden Road. These monthly chats are an excellent way to talk with the mayor directly and ask questions, share your concerns, or discuss anything pertaining to the city.
Shout-out: First, if you have not tried the pizza from Smash Pizza Express in the Zip Thru Beverage, 6349 Jaycox Road, you must! Not only is the pizza amazing, but the owners are also amazing. They recently dropped off pizzas (along with beverages from Zip Thru) at the North Ridgeville Police Department to say ‘thank you.’
For those not familiar with the new Smash Pizza Express location, you cannot call in your order. You must go to Zip Thru Beverage and place your order and wait for your pizza. It’s worth the wait.
If you have news/information or a story idea you’d like to share or a ‘shout-out’, please send an email to jshortavon@aol.com.
