Multi-sport former Cardinal Eden Short prepared for college tennis at Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS — Eden Short was devastated back in the beginning of spring upon receiving word that she would be missing out on her senior tennis season, as well as a chance to run the tables and dominate one final time.

Despite this, Short has still been able to train and stay at the top of her game throughout the course of what has been an unorthodox summer for all student-athletes, especially those graduating seniors.

An athlete from head-to-toe, Short has dabbled in a variety of sports during her prep years, and has experienced success in each one.

From soccer to basketball, to track and field, and eventually tennis, Short emerged at the top at every step of the way, but when others saw her tennis skills, she knew that was truly the sport she was meant to play.

During her eight-grade summer, Short attended a University of Notre Dame tennis camp; at that point, she had been involved with tennis for a mere two months, but gained a great deal of praise, which propelled her forward.

“I practiced all summer, went to Notre Dame’s tennis camp and got a whole bunch of recognition,” Short said. “Once they gave me that validation, I was like: ‘Okay, I can do something with this.’”

Ever since she began playing and learning the game, Short said she was constantly competing in tournaments, and subsequently joined a racquet club so she could improve her skills even more.

Short said establishing and improving her Universal Tennis Rating — a worldwide and universally accepted rating and ranking system of all players — was also a principal goal of hers from the onset of her tennis career.

“I played tournaments from the very beginning, just because I started so late in comparison to everyone else, so I had to get my rank up,” Short said. “The bigger, more important the tournament, the more points you get, and your rating can go up or down.”

Over the weekend, Short graduated in Big Rapids High School’s recent impromptu COVID-19-induced ceremony, and is doing all she can to prepare herself for the challenges that come with being a collegiate tennis player at Ferris State in the fall.

While a couple of other schools fell through, Ferris remained a constant go-to for Short, and she said she is happy to stay local while playing tennis at a competitive level.

Even though it’s been a strange time to transition from high school to college as a student-athlete and she’s had virtually no face-to-face meetings with her teammates and coaches, Short is ready for whatever comes her way in the months to come.

“It’s definitely a big, big difference, but we’re taking advantage of what we can; making it work for sure,” Short said.
