AVON LAKE, Ohio -- The Avon-On-The-Lake Garden Club has a long history of giving back to the community. The public can also enjoy the beautiful gardens located at Miller Road Park near the Peter Miller House Museum, 33740 Lake Road.
The club’s theme for the year is “Share Our Vision” -- and members are doing just that with the recent installation of the Little Garden Book House at the Wildflower Garden at Miller Road Park.
The book house is filled with books and magazines all about gardening. The idea behind the project is for the community to borrow, share and donate their garden books.
“Having our fundraising events canceled due to COVID-19, our group had a very small budget this year, but we still wanted to contribute to the community and came up with a way that we could share what we love and what we do with others,” said club President Elaine George.
The project has been in the works since the spring. The house was constructed and donated to the city in honor of the club’s 90th anniversary by club member Sue Newcomb. Artwork on the house was painted by club member Ann Lyon.

Free COVID-19 testing: In partnership with Lorain County Public Health and the Ohio National Guard, the city is hosting two free pop-up COVID-19 community testing events at Ellen Trivanovich Aquatic Center, 32850 Electric Blvd.
Dates/times are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 19) and 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 20). Testing is for people 2 and older.
You do not need to have any symptoms to be tested. A doctor’s order, an appointment and a medical insurance card are also not required. It will take approximately three days to receive results.
The test is a PCR test (not an antigen test), which will tell people if they have COVID-19 at the time of the test. It is not an antibody test, so the results won’t tell you if you’ve had COVID-19 in the past.
Lorain County Public Health will follow up with all positive tests from people who reside in Lorain County. Anyone who tests positive, but lives outside of Lorain County, will be contacted by their local health department.
